RIP Alex Roy Carmichael

October 6, 2011

Alex with my daughter, Georgia in 1999

Last week my friend Alex Carmichael lost his battle with cancer.

Alex left school at 16 with no qualifications and joined the navy. He served in the navy for 9 years before becoming first a qualified carpenter then a research psychologist having gained a degree and a PhD on the way.

Alex was best man at my wedding, godfather to my son and my closest friend. I owe him a great deal, he inspired me to start my research career and was instrumental in me getting my first research funding. Always an inspiration he was part of my family as well as his own.

The world just became a poorer place.

"I’ve never really felt like I fit in anywhere (but have found life a lot easier since I stopped trying)"
